Invicta 22571 Objet D'Art skeleton automatic men's watch, an alternative to the Apple Watch Series 12

Apple Watch Series 12 Lands September 9. Here's What $429 Buys in a Mechanical Watch

Apple's autumn event is expected on September 9, 2026, and the Apple Watch Series 12 and Apple Watch Ultra 4 are both expected to appear. Pre-announcement reporting points to roughly $429 for the Series 12 and somewhere between $799 and $899 for the Ultra 4. Treat every one of those numbers as a rumour until Apple confirms them on stage.

Either way, a lot of people are about to decide what a watch on their wrist is worth. This is not an argument that you should skip the Apple Watch. It is a straight look at what the same money buys if you want a watch rather than a computer, which one wins at what, and the one comparison that genuinely surprised us when we ran it against our own stock.

Apple Watch vs mechanical watch: the short comparison

Apple Watch Series 12 (expected) Automatic mechanical watch
Expected price Around $429 $72 to $270 in our current stock
Power source Rechargeable battery, daily charging Motion of your wrist, no charging ever
Fitness and heart rate Yes, continuous No
Notifications and payments Yes No
Timekeeping accuracy Effectively perfect Typically several seconds a day
Software updates Ends after several years Not applicable
Working life Roughly 4 to 6 years Decades with occasional service
Water resistance 50m swimproof 100m to 300m on dive models

What does an Apple Watch actually do better?

Quite a lot, and pretending otherwise would be silly. A smartwatch gives you continuous heart rate, workout tracking, sleep data, fall and crash detection, contactless payments, messages on your wrist and turn-by-turn directions. If you run, lift, swim or want your wrist to nudge you when a text lands, a mechanical watch does none of that and never will.

If those features are the reason you are buying, buy the Apple Watch. The rest of this is for the person buying a watch because they want to wear a watch.

What does $429 buy in a mechanical watch?

At the time of writing, roughly the Series 12's expected price buys two automatics from our stock with money left over.

Invicta 22571 Objet D'Art skeleton automatic men's watch with exposed balance wheel, priced at $188.49

That is $312.24 for two self-winding mechanical watches, leaving about $117 spare. Both have exhibition skeleton dials, so you can watch the balance wheel doing the work. Neither will ever need charging.

Prefer one watch instead of two? The Montres Prestige X Invicta Automatic, 44mm sits at $270.30 against a $695 list, and still leaves change from the Series 12 price.

What does the Ultra 4 money buy?

Here is the comparison that surprised us when we ran the numbers on our own inventory. Every automatic watch we currently have listed under $429, all five of them, comes to $792.94 in total:

That total is less than the rumoured starting price of a single Apple Watch Ultra 4. Five mechanical watches, five different case sizes and dials, versus one titanium computer.

That is not a judgement about which is better. It is arithmetic, and it is worth seeing before you spend.

Which one still works in ten years?

This is the real difference, and it is not about features.

A smartwatch is a computer with a battery. The battery degrades, the software eventually stops receiving updates, and resale value follows the same curve as a phone. A four or five year old smartwatch is a device you are deciding whether to replace.

A mechanical watch has no battery and no software. An automatic winds itself from the motion of your wrist, and a service every several years keeps it running effectively indefinitely. A five year old automatic is just a watch you own.

That is the entire trade: the smartwatch does far more today, and the mechanical watch is still doing its one job long after the smartwatch stops receiving updates.

Do mechanical watches hold their value?

Honestly, at this price point, no, and anyone telling you otherwise is selling something. Fashion and entry-level mechanical watches depreciate just like electronics do. The watches that appreciate are a narrow set of Rolex, Patek Philippe and Audemars Piguet references, not a $120 skeleton automatic.

So do not buy either of these as an investment. The honest distinction is not resale value, it is useful life. Both lose money. Only one of them still tells the time in 2046.

What is the Apple Watch Ultra actually for?

The Ultra line is built for endurance athletes, divers and hikers: a bigger battery, a brighter screen, a titanium case, and depth and temperature sensors. If you are doing multi-day hikes or open-water swimming, that is a genuine tool and the price makes sense.

If you are buying the Ultra because it looks rugged rather than because you need dive-rated depth logging, that is worth being honest with yourself about. A Pro Diver 49433 at $54.10 delivers the rugged dive-watch look with a 200m-class case, and it costs about six percent of an Ultra 4.

Automatic or quartz, if you are buying a real watch?

If you go mechanical, movement type is the next question and it genuinely changes the ownership experience. An automatic sweeps and self-winds. A quartz ticks, costs less, and keeps far better time. We wrote a full breakdown in automatic versus quartz, but the short version is that automatics are the ones people fall for, and quartz is the one that just works.

If you want the mechanism on display without spending automatic money, skeleton dials also come in quartz. The Invicta Bolt with the Swiss Ronda Z60 caliber is $98.49 and names its movement outright, which is what a real spec claim looks like. Our skeleton watch guide covers that range in more depth.

What size case should you buy?

Case diameter matters more than any spec on the box, and it is the most common sizing mistake. The Series 12 is expected in 42mm and 46mm cases. Mechanical watches run wider: our automatics above span 43mm to 44mm, and the Bolt is a deliberately oversized 50mm.

If your wrist is under about 6.5 inches, 40mm to 42mm will sit better than a 50mm slab, whatever the photos suggest. The wrist-size guide has the measurements.

Why are these so much cheaper than the list price?

Fair question, and the honest answer is that watch list prices are aspirational rather than a record of what anybody pays. We priced 141 watches from our own stock against the real market and published the results in why Invicta watches are so cheap.

Apple is the opposite case, and the contrast is instructive. Apple sets one price and holds it, so $429 really is $429. Traditional watch brands set a high list price and expect the market to discount from it. Neither number is exactly a lie, but only one tells you what the thing is worth.

If low prices make you cautious, that instinct is correct, and we wrote the checklist for it: how to spot a fake Invicta covers verifying a model number in about fifteen seconds.

So which should you buy?

Genuinely, it depends on the job:

  • Buy the Apple Watch if you want fitness tracking, notifications, payments or the safety features. Nothing mechanical competes on any of that.
  • Buy a mechanical watch if you want something to wear rather than something to charge, and you would rather own two or three watches than one gadget.
  • Buy both, which is what plenty of people actually do. The smartwatch goes on for the gym and the flight, the mechanical goes on for everything else.

Everything currently in stock is in our watch collection.

Is the Apple Watch Series 12 worth upgrading to?

If you are on a Series 9 or later, the expected changes are incremental: a faster chip, a ceramic case option and possible continuous heart rate. That is a modest upgrade for $429. If you are on a Series 6 or older, or coming from no smartwatch at all, the jump is substantial and probably worth it.

Can you wear a mechanical watch and still track fitness?

Yes, and it is the setup a lot of watch people land on. A fitness band or a smart ring handles tracking on your non-dominant wrist or your finger, and the mechanical watch stays on for everything else. That sidesteps the choice entirely for less than the price difference between the Series 12 and the Ultra 4.
